How We Grow Our Basil
- Seed Germination: We use the highest quality of seeeds to grow our basil and germination typically takes about 7 to 10 days. During this stage, the seeds absorb water and begin to sprout. Keep the soil moist and maintain a warm temperature (around 75-85°F or 24-29°C) to encourage germination.
- Seedling Stage: After germination, basil seedlings emerge after 10-14 days. At this point, they require adequate light. We keep the soil consistently moist and ensure good air circulation.
- Transplanting: Once the seedlings have developed a few sets of true leaves and are around 2 to 4 inches tall, they can be transplanted.
- Maturity and Harvest: Basil plants typically mature around 8 weeks after germination. At this point, they are ready for regular harvesting. Harvesting the leaves can promote bushier growth and prevent the plant from flowering too soon. The flavor of basil is usually most intense before the plant flowers
Harvesting
We begin by harvesting basil at the optimal time to ensure peak freshness and quality, typically just before flowering to capture the best flavor. Timing is crucial, as harvesting too late can result in a decline in taste and aromatic properties. Our careful selection ensures that each bunch is rich in essential oils, allowing us to deliver a product that meets high culinary standards and satisfies consumer expectations.
Initial Handling
After harvesting, our basil herbs for export get into our facility to undergo preparatory processes for optimal selection and processing for export. We take special care not to damage the delicate leaves during this process, ensuring that they remain intact and visually appealing. By actively managing moisture levels, we reduce the likelihood of wilting and ensure that the basil retains its aromatic qualities, making it more desirable for consumers. Our handling practices aim to preserve the herb’s natural content and freshness for the next stages.
Trimming
We trim the basil to remove any damaged or yellowing leaves, ensuring that only the freshest parts of the plant are packaged. This step enhances the visual appeal and helps maintain quality during storage and transport. By carefully cutting away any undesirable parts, we also reduce the risk of decay, as damaged leaves can lead to moisture accumulation and spoilage in the packaging.
Grading
We ensure that only the highest grade of basil is exported, and this is through a process of selecting the basil with the broadest leaves and shoots. We also sample and examine the herbs in specialized equipment to ascertain richness in nutritive content.
Weighing, and Packaging
We bunch and weigh the basil in units of 100g, 50g, and 30g bunches as preparation for packaging within three hours of harvest. Such expediency helps maintain its quality.
Choosing appropriate packaging methods, we wrap the bunches in plastic bags and bulk package them into styrofoam boxes or cartons. Utilizing perforated polyethylene or polypropylene bags allows for necessary gas exchange, reducing moisture accumulation, which helps minimize decay and extend the shelf-life of the basil. We provide packaged basil in boxes of 1kg and 3kg.
Cooling
We promptly cool the packaged basil to appropriate storage temperatures, typically between 2-6°C, to extend its shelf-life. This rapid cooling process is critical, especially given the challenges associated with chilling-sensitive basil. By closely monitoring the temperature, we minimize any quality loss, ensuring that the herb maintains its vibrant color and flavor. Proper cooling is a key factor in preserving the herb’s marketable quality during storage.
Modified Atmosphere Packaging (MA)
We consider using modified atmosphere packaging to maintain the quality of basil for extended periods. Conducting tests, we flush the packages with specific gas mixtures, ensuring optimal levels of CO2 (around 7-10%) and O2 (8-10%). This carefully controlled environment helps inhibit senescence and preserve the basil’s color and aroma. By utilizing MA packaging, we enhance the herb’s shelf-life while keeping its fresh characteristics intact for consumers.
Storage
We store the packaged basil in a cool storage facility, ensuring consistent temperature management to prevent decay and moisture loss. These factors are major contributors to reduced shelf-life and quality deterioration. By maintaining stable conditions, we protect the basil from spoilage and ensure that it remains fresh for an extended period. Regular checks of the storage environment are essential to uphold our quality standards.
Dispatch to the Customer
We use refrigerated transport, recognizing that many herbs, including basil, are often transported at ambient temperatures. During transport, we keep track of handling practices to ensure the basil is not subjected to temperature fluctuations. Such fluctuations can lead to rapid quality deterioration, which we aim to avoid. Our commitment to proper transport methods helps us deliver high-quality basil to our customers consistently.
